Drunk Driver Hits Bicyclist in Sarasota
SARASOTA, Fla. — A 61-year-old bicyclist from Apple Creek, Ohio is in the hospital with critical injuries after Florida Highway Patrol troopers said he was hit by an intoxicated driver in Sarasota. The driver, 23-year-old Rafael Castellanos, faces multiple charges, including felony fleeing the scene with serious injury, reckless driving, and DUI, as reported by the FHP.
The incident occurred around 4:57 p.m. on Wednesday. Castellanos was traveling west on Bahia Vista Street, approaching Kaufman Avenue, when the bicyclist was crossing the intersection. According to reports, Castellanos failed to stop at a red light before colliding with the bicyclist, resulting in serious injuries.
After the crash, both Castellanos and a 16-year-old passenger exited the vehicle. However, Castellanos allegedly re-entered the car and fled the scene while the passenger escaped on foot.
Law enforcement located Castellanos shortly thereafter, and he was arrested. He is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail. The bicyclist was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
