What is Sarasota’s Season of Sharing and How Can You Help?
As hurricane season approaches, The Patterson Foundation is proactively contributing $500,000 to the Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund, bringing its total contributions to over $4 million.
The fund, initiated by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County following Hurricane Ian, addresses both current and potential disaster recovery needs in Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, and Charlotte counties. With this latest donation, the fund has amassed a total of over $10.2 million to aid long-term recovery.
Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation, emphasized the necessity of disaster preparedness. “Long-term recovery funding is essential for the future resilience of our communities,” she stated. “Investing before a disaster strikes equips us to face future storms more effectively.”
Research indicates that immediate relief donations often overshadow long-term recovery needs. The Suncoast Disaster Recovery Fund aims to bridge this gap by providing critical ongoing support. This includes areas such as mental health services, legal aid, case management, and aid for children and youth, alongside initiatives guided by local Long Term Recovery Groups.
“Many needs will emerge after weeks, months, or even years post-storm,” explained Kirsten Russell, vice president of community impact at the Community Foundation. “Investing in long-term recovery ensures our most vulnerable populations can heal and secure their stability.”
The Community Foundation also facilitates immediate support for families facing crises regarding housing, utilities, childcare, and transportation through its 25-year-long initiative, Season of Sharing.
Donations to this fund and the Season of Sharing can be made through CFSarasota.org or by mailing checks to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, 2635 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, FL 34237. All contributions are tax-deductible.
