SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. — A young child was rescued after being pulled into a drainage system due to a water main break on Bahia Vista Street. The incident occurred at 5433 Bahia Vista Street, where strong water flow from the break caused the child, who was playing near a culvert, to be swept away.
Deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) reported that the child traveled approximately 100 yards west down Bahia Vista Street through the drainage system before help arrived. The Sarasota County Fire Department responded promptly, and the child was subsequently taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
As a result of the incident, both eastbound and westbound traffic on Bahia Vista Street between Honore Avenue and Arcadia Avenue will remain closed until further notice. Public works crews are currently working to address the water main break.
