SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Law enforcement officers face unpredictable challenges with each shift. This was evident for Officer Luis Colon during the early hours of June 30.
Responding to a call at an inn, Officer Colon sprang into action upon hearing a nearby crash. “I just heard the noise and just took off,” he recounted.
Body-worn camera footage released by the Sarasota Police Department captures the urgent moments that followed. As the first officers on the scene, they discovered an engine bay fully engulfed in flames. Officer Colon found an unconscious woman slumped over the center console of her vehicle and had to cut her seatbelt to extricate her. They quickly pulled her from the wreckage as the entire car became engulfed in flames.
“It was a little surreal just kind of seeing that because knowing if we were 10 seconds later, she would’ve been on fire,” Officer Colon explained, recalling how the passenger seat was already ablaze as they moved the woman to safety on the sidewalk. “If we were just 10 seconds later, it would’ve been a whole different story.”
Thanks to the officer’s swift actions, the woman’s life was saved. For Officer Colon, this was pure instinct. “I was just focused on trying to figure out what was going on and the well-being of anybody in that accident. I wasn’t even thinking about my own well-being because I knew how much time I had.”
In a Facebook post, the Sarasota Police Department praised the officers for their courage and commitment to protecting others, stating, “A job well done by these officers who continue to serve with courage, commitment, and dedication.” The crash is currently under investigation.
